This was the most #unreal place I’ve ever been to! #CambridgeBay, #Nunavut, #Canada 🇨🇦, a place so cold, your fingers get frostbite once you take your gloves of. Only 1800km (about 1200mi) from the North Pole, here 1600 inhabitants make a living, despite living up to 11 months a year in harsh and brutal arctic winter conditions, only to enjoy one month of artic „summer“, before it gets cold again.
And we are not talking regular cold here, we are talking -40 degrees Celsius cold, with winds making the windchill temperature even colder. Daylight hours in December and January are only from about 10 to 15 (10AM to 3PM), but it never gets really bright, instead you have a few hours of sunrise and sunset light. An amazing place to visit, but personally I don’t want to live there.
Beside the locals residing here, you also have a small US-Canadian mixed Army station, which mans the local early-warning radar station against Russian nuclear rockets. And there is a science station, the Canadian High Arctic Research Station. But that’s about it. Two super markets and two or three restaurants which aren’t always open complete that little village. .
On the last image (a screenshot from @googlemaps), the northernmost flag is Cambridge Bay, the one below is Yellowknife and the third flag in the “South” is Edmonton.
